Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's Labour Party will face off with Tony Abbott's Liberal-National party coalition in a bid to remain in power. Rudd's party has been reported running behind in recent polls. The five-week campaign is expected to focus on who can best steer Australia's economy, the world's 12th-largest, through a downturn as the mining boom subsides.
Tony Abbott said the function of government was to:
- Deliver a stronger economy
- Provide National Security
- Build a strong and cohesive society
