West Side Story

A review of West Side Story by Rob Mason

Today (Sunday) I went to see the musical, “West Side Story” playing at the Civic Theatre.  My reaction was that it was intensely emotional.  This was attributable to the wonderful music of Leonard Bernstein and with expressive lyrics by Stephen Sondheim’s, and breath-taking choreography by Jerome Robbins.

West Side Story is an award-winning musical adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet". The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs, the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. The two gangs battle for control of the turf. but the situation becomes complicated when a gang member falls in love with a rival's sister.
Overall very colourful, alive and fast moving even though there are tragic and emotional moments..
